The Fidar Association, in cooperation with the Ankara Association for Solidarity with Palestine "ANFİDAP" (ANFİDAP), took part in organising a memorial vigil in the Turkish capital, Ankara, to commemorate martyrs from the Gaza Strip who died in Türkiye during treatment journeys for injuries they sustained in the war.
The event was held at Karşıyaka Cemetery in Ankara, where 55 martyrs from the Gaza Strip were laid to rest after arriving in Türkiye to receive treatment, before their health deteriorated and they passed away.
The vigil was attended by representatives of a number of institutions and associations and by solidarity activists with the Palestinian cause. It included the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran and prayers for the souls of the martyrs, along with speeches that recalled the sacrifices of the Palestinians and the suffering of the people of the Gaza Strip during the war.
During the event, Palestinian journalist and academic Dr. Zaher al-Baik delivered a speech in which he evoked the suffering of the people of the Strip and the scale of the losses left by the war, stressing that the martyrs of Gaza buried in Karşıyaka Cemetery will remain part of Palestinian memory, and that their departure has not ended their presence in their people's cause.
Al-Baik pointed out that these martyrs left Gaza in search of treatment, but passed away in Türkiye, stressing that their memory will remain tied to the sacrifices of the Palestinian people and their adherence to their right to freedom and return.
He also thanked Türkiye and the Turkish people for receiving Palestinian wounded and patients from the Gaza Strip and providing them with medical care, stressing that the Palestinians will continue to hold fast to their land, their rights and their national constants.
At the conclusion of the vigil, the participants headed to the graves of the martyrs, where they recited al-Fatiha and prayed for their souls, and placed Palestinian flags on the graves, in a scene that carried a message of loyalty to the martyrs and affirmed the continuation of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Karşıyaka Cemetery in Ankara has become one of the places that embrace Palestinian martyrs who died in Türkiye after arriving for treatment, leaving their graves as a witness to the humanitarian repercussions of the war in the Gaza Strip, and to the journey of the wounded and patients who were forced to leave the Strip in search of treatment and care.
